Grouper

The Grouper Family: Titans of the Reef

Groupers are the heavyweights of the bottom-fishing world. Known for their massive mouths and powerful bodies, these fish are ambush predators that rely on suction to inhale their prey whole. From the shallow patch reefs to the deepest ledges, they are the undisputed kings of the structure.

Popular Species: Gags and Reds

In Florida waters, the Gag Grouper and Red Grouper are the most sought-after targets. Gags are often found around rocky ledges and wrecks, known for their greyish-brown marbled pattern. Red Groupers prefer flatter "hard bottom" areas and are famous for digging out their own holes in the seafloor to live in.

The Goliath Grouper

The true giant of the family is the Goliath Grouper. These massive fish can grow to over 800 pounds and live for decades. Once nearly extinct, they have made a significant comeback and are now a common sight for divers and anglers around bridges, piers, and offshore wrecks.

A Battle of Strength

Fishing for grouper is a game of "win or lose" in the first five seconds. Once hooked, a grouper will immediately dive for its hole or a sharp rock to break the line. Anglers must use heavy tackle and locked-down drags to pull these powerful fish away from the structure before they get "rocked up."
